The Creation Tapestries

Mr. Michael Rumsey has been a church member for over six decades, as well as our organist for the past fifty years.

Over the past year Michael, an expert embroiderer as well as musician, has been very busy making six beautiful tapestries. Each one depicts an impression of the stages of The Creation, inspired by the powerful and moving passages from Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

The works have been framed and are on permanent display around the walls of the church. You are welcome to come and admire them. See the Services, Regular Events and Special Events pages to find out when the Church is open.

Day 1

The “Creation” tapestries

Day 1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was a vast waste and darkness covered the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water. God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light; and God saw the light was good, and He separated light from darkness. He called the light day, and the darkness night.

So evening came, the morning came, it was the first day.

Day 2

The “Creation tapestries”

Day 2

God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters, to separate water from water.” So God made the vault, and separated the water under the vault from the water above it, and so it was; and God called the vault the heavens.

Evening came, and morning came, the second day.

Day 3

The “Creation” tapestries

Day 3

God said "Let the water under the heavens be gathered into one place, so that dry land may appear, and so it was. God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the water He called sea; and God saw it was good. Then God said, "Let the earth produce growing things; let there be on the earth plants that bear seed, and trees bearing fruit each with its own kind of seed". So it was; the earth produced growing things, plants bearing their own kind of seed and trees bearing fruit, each with its own kind of seed; and God saw it was good.

So evening came; the third day.

Day 4

The “Creation” tapestries

Day 4

God said, "Let there be lights in the vault of the heavens to separate day from night, and let them serve as both for festivals and for seasons and for years. Let them also shine in the heavens to give light on earth." So it was; God made two great lights, the greater to govern the day and the lesser to govern the night: He also made the stars. God put these lights in the vault of the heavens to give light on earth, to govern day and night, and to separate light from darkness; and God saw it was good.

Evening came, and morning came, the fourth day.

Day 5

The “Creation” tapestries

Day 5

God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the heavens.” God then created the great sea beasts and all living creatures that move and swarm in the water, according to their various kinds, and every kind of bird, and God saw that it was good. He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase; fill the water of the sea, and let the birds increase on the land.”

So evening came, the morning came, the fifth day.

Day 6

The “Creation” tapestries

Day 6

God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures, according to their various kinds; cattle, creeping things, and wild animals, all according to their various kinds.” So it was; God made wild animals, cattle, and every creeping thing, all according to their various kinds and He saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness, to have dominion over the fish of the sae, the birds of the air, the cattle, all wild animals on land, and everything that creeps on the earth.” God created human beings in His own image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.

Evening came, and morning came, the sixth day.

Technical details:

The six tapestries were designed by Alex Beattie and each measures 17 inches x 17.5 inches, a total of 297 square inches per canvas. Each square inch has 144 stiches, giving a total per canvas of 42,840 stitches and for the complete set a total of 257,040 stitches. It took a year to complete the six tapestries and Right Angle Framing of the High Street, Corsham, undertook to stretch and frame each one. The cost of the framing was covered by kind donations from members and friends of the church's congregation.

The creation tapestries were Dedicated by the Rev. Elizabeth Kirova on Palm Sunday, March 28th during the morning service.
